I was given this book to read and I was asked to give an honest review so here goes.

Opening page you hit the ground running. It doesn’t let up for a second all the way through.
The characters are portrayed brilliantly.
From the main character and his partner to the doorman they are all brilliantly written into this story.
I can actually see the doorman maybe one day getting his own story told.
The plot is good and solid.
The detectives girlfriend disappears a year ago, he’s still feeling the loss of not knowing what’s happened to her.
While this is in the background of his mind daily he still tackles crime and even the criminals are well described.
Could it have been better? Well yes of course it could but if this is what he dishes up as his debut novel then look out as this author is going places.

Debut novels don’t usually offer so much. I’ve read many that didn’t remotely come close to what this author has delivered. I will be eagerly waiting to see what he does next.

Overall would I recommend it? Hell yes

Did I enjoy it? Without a doubt

Will I buy more of this authors work? In a heart beat yes

Joe’s girlfriend disappeared just under a year ago. Since then Joe has been trying to pick up the pieces as well as find her. On his patch there are 2 rival mafia gangs- two related families who each control their own area. When one family’s daughter is about to marry the others one’s son- she is kidnapped and murder’s start happening. Could any of this be related to the disappearance of Joe’s girlfriend Gemma? We know little about Gemma and how she disappeared. Maybe this is another story to come?
A well written and compelling novel. Short chapters keep this rolling and make you want to turn more and more. Joe is a believable character with years of experience and he certainly gets into the thick of it. This has either been very well researched or someone has an “in” to policing and the criminal underworld. The writing is descriptive enough that you can picture the scene easily but without every minute unneeded detail. A fantastic ending and I just get the feeling that there might be more to come from Joe? Bring it on!
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review

I would like to thank Shell at the Crime Book Club and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest and open review.
What a book! The action starts on page 1 and doesn’t let up until the end.
The pace of the story was just right. The short, snappy chapters kept me turning the pages with bated breath, wondering what was going to happen next!
The main characters, particularly Joe, are very well depicted. They have their good points and they have bad ones, but don’t we all. That’s what makes them seem so human.
The dialogue is believable and flows easily between the characters.
There’s never a dull moment in the plot, so if you’re after a thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat this is definitely one for you.

Excellent characterization with enough ‘back story’ on the lead players to enhance the readers sense of involvement
articularly enjoyed the use of short chapters which fitted the style of the story perfectly and enabled all the strands of the plot to run along side each other without confusion, but also left numerous cliff hangers as the story caught up with concurrent action.
An amount of research by the author is evident in the settings and descriptions of the locations, which gives the story a gritty and very real feeling of a criminal underworld at war.
Can imagine there could be plenty more cases for Detective Stone and his sidekick let alone some ongoing business from this first outing – the ending certainly suggests that they may re-appear!

I enjoyed the style of this book, & the way the story was told from the main character Detective Joe Stone’s perspective, as well as some chapters being told in the third person. The chapters were short & left me wanting to read the next chapter. The book captured the atmosphere of gangland London, as well as an insight into the lives of Detective Stone & his team. I do feel that the story should have provided the reader with a bit more background info surrounding the relationship between Jack & Gemma, & her disappearance, although I’m guessing it’s being saved for the next book in the series? It will be interesting to see how the other characters will develop in the series, such as Stella, Carl & the mysterious Graham….All in all an enjoyable read.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was an enjoyable read and has you hooked from page 1. It is an easy read and hard to put down because of the short chapters.
I liked the storyline around the mafia and that this was set in London. The descriptive writing helps you to visualise and understand what is going on. I felt sometimes though that the writing was a little bit over descriptive and sometimes the sentences too short and snappy.
I liked the main character Joe and the sneak preview we get into his own private life and the cliff hanger at the end just leaves you wanting more!
For a debut novel this is a good read and I would recommend this to others. Looking forward to book 2.

I’m sure there will be a second to follow this having been left on a cliff hanger, I enjoyed the pace, short chapters, description and the story was it seemed well researched. Read more Published 5 days ago by Knayton
